Core
Question he would ask a superior being: "That's a difficult question. Possibly I would ask him to predict the future. The world is becoming a very fascinating place and knowledge is accelerating so rapidly. Having come from a place where there was no TV to now where we have computers and so on and all the things that are possible- space exploration- I think: 'ten years from now what will the world be like? what will it be like twenty years from now?' I think it will be a fascinating place."
Advice to someone younger (lessons from life): "Do everything you can to keep your health because no amount of money will bring it back. I would suggest that students set goals for themselves so they know where they are going. I think young people should love change because change is the one constant that we have. Never stop learning. There is so much to learn and one never knows in all."
Accomplishment before leaving this world: "I think I am through with any one accomplishment. Having come from poverty and having succeeded primarily by own efforts, I like to help young people to do the same and to succeed and to enable them to do this by what ever means necessary."
His definition of the "good life" now: "The good life now is having sufficient food and funds etc. and being able to help other people who need help."
Trust: "Probably not (not trust anyone completely)...not completely. To a great degree...but not completely."
"I think people are about as trustworthy as they were when I was a kid..about the same. I don't see a difference. I do see that people seem to make appointments and break them with ease. Without even having the courtesy to phone."
Aim in life: "Well, it's a bit late for that (laughs). At this point it is: to leave the world a better place than I found it. And do the best to help other people who need help."
Things that distract from this aim: "I don't know that anything distracts me from it. When I set my mind on doing something I do it."
How feel about getting older: "Well, they say with age comes wisdom. But it is a rotten trade. (laughs) There is nothing to do about it. One ages and one stays as healthy as one can. It has some benefits. You don't have to go through the rat race again: making money and so on."
Looking back: feeling about accomplishments so far: "I feel pretty good. I had a goal to become a fighter pilot and I was one. There are not many people in the world who have done that. There weren't many people who were accepted for it. I was a teacher and principal and not many people have the opportunity to do that. One had a great deal of influence on the educational system and that was very satisfying. I would say those were the two things... (accomplishments in ) photography too."
Purpose of life: "That's the 64,000 dollar question to which nobody has the answer. There is no answer to that. As far as I am concerned, making yourself happy, making other people happy is where it is at. One hundred years from now, no one will care."
Life Philosophy: "I suppose it might be based on that of the knights of old: chivalry, prowess, generosity, loyalty, courtesy. I think those four things epitomize (my life philosophy). I try in my own way to emulate those."
