Digital Journalism Curriculum
for full (180 day) program
1st Semester: 85 Days (Aug-Dec)
2nd Semester: 95 Days (Jan -May)
- Introduction
- Review of pilot project
- Review of current demos (still with timeline with public context and animated lesson)
- BRIEF TRAINING: composing the still image
- BEGIN PRODUCTION: They sketch/plan their still image
- CLASS LITE CRITIQUE: own still images
- FINISH PRODUCTION: They complete/ redo their still image (art materials)
- BRIEF TRAINING: Brainstorming and Story boarding
- BRIEF PRODUCTION: brainstorm and story board own lesson
- CLASS LITE CRITIQUE: own story board (students make changes to story boards)
-this initial plan is documented as a 'baseline' (to see if lesson changes throughout and after completing senior lessons)
- TRAINING: Audio recording training
- PRODUCTION: audio recording own lesson and editing (sound booth)
- CLASS CRITIQUE: own lesson audio and redo production session
- TRAINING: photography
- PRODUCTION: photography (or collab w/ other students) own lesson
- CLASS CRITIQUE: own lesson photos and redo production session
- TRAINING: Video recording
- PRODUCTION: video recording own lesson
- CLASS CRITIQUE: own lesson video and redo production session
- TRAINING: AfterEffects, Photoshop, Flash
- TRAINING with Demo Project: Animation
-using AfterEffects’ faceTracking, lipSync, Premiere, Photoshop and digital tablets, and Flash

- TRAINING with Demo Project: responsive web design: for mobile
- They choose a senior subject from profiles I’we collected
- We assign production crew roles (each senior subject assigned 3 students: audio, visual, animation/ interactivity)
- TRAINING: They are trained on ethnographic field work
-getting subject comfortable, isolating and capturing the story
- They gather subject resources: interviews (isolate a story), photos, video (transportation plan)
- CLASS CRITIQUE:
-assess worthiness of each story
-assess quality of resources:, audio, images, video (determine ‘re-dos’)
-Brainstorm composition of still image for each story selected
-Brainstorm story treatment for each story selected
--block out story board
--recommendations for effects
- TRAINING: soundtrack (music production software, creative commons music)
- INDIVIDUAL CONFERENCE: with resources, workflow recommendations
- PRODUCTION: senior subject
-audio, photo, video editing
-animating
-exporting
- Creation of stills (me: watercolors)
- FINAL CRITIQUE
- CLASS EVALUATION & FINAL EXERCISE (story board original student lesson or new lesson)
- SHOW (at school: student’s own icons, senior subject’s icons)
- INSTALLATION (at institution, transportation plan)
