Real World Decisions on the Job
Lot of people ask me : "You have two houses side by side. They are both 3000 square feet and one is a hundred thousand dollars more than the other. Why?" The cost of a curve I draw floor plans to follow the curve all the way around in most of my homes. I want the circular design to flow from the basement to the first floor to the second floor. I figured it out, though. The additional cost to make a curve staircase instead of a straight one in a location like this is about 10,000 dollars. These curves cost more than a 90 degree corner because everything else built later has to fit to it. We make the walls bend around a corner by using 1/4" wallboard. (It will bend without being heat treated.) We put a bead of glue on each stud and then use screws to hold its shape as we go around. The process is a little different for an inside curve but the principal is the same. It costs a lot more and is a lot more trouble to do all this but these curves add a special look to a home. This is what makes them "custom" homes. It gives them their unique character. |
