How He Entered the Field
While working as a sales representative for a publishing company, I began investing in residential income property. I have always done more than one thing at one time. I started reading and learning everything I could about the real estate business. I began to learn about "equity" and other concepts having to do with owning property. I wanted to learn what I needed to know to become financially independent. I read books on how you could make a million dollars in five years. I began by taking some equity out of my house. In the 70's they called it "creative financing." Now it's a normal way of doing business. I bought income properties near the university campus and within 5 years I had assets of well over a million dollars. At that time my boss, at my day job, was telling me what I should be doing and how much money I could be making working for him! I was already making more money than he was. That's when I quit working for someone else and when I did, I never looked back. I built my first house in 1978 and began investing heavily in income property. I found people to invest in my business and slowly built it up. At first, I did most of the remodeling myself until I could afford to hire others to do the work for me. I have been through a lot since then: I went through a bankruptcy and a divorce but I never lost sight of my goal which was to stay on my own and do my own thing. |
