A Day on the Job with Larry

Construction careers

Larry is a good example of a "boot straps" kind of guy. He got into home building 22 years ago, knowing nothing about the field. Through careful planning, personal goal setting and a lot of persistence, he has developed his own very successful custom home building company in which he takes great pride: "I have never duplicated a home in 22 years."

He thinks of his high school years as an important time when he was able to take an honest look at his strengths and weaknesses and move into what later turned out to be his niche: "I was an average student in Math and English, but I was very good with my hands. There was this nun who was my art teacher, who gave me the kick in the pants to follow my natural abilities. All I knew was that I wanted to be 'a builder.' I didn't have a clue what all that meant but I learned by doing. I never took any classes in building and I always worked as a carpenter on my own projects. I just liked to work with my hands and my goal has always been to own my own business."

Larry considers home building to be an extension of his 'artistic sensibilities' which provides personal fulfillment and a very good income. "Home building is a satisfying lifestyle and a fantastic career path. It is a vehicle that any one can use to accomplish what they want from a monetary standpoint."

It comes with the territory: decisions on the job

Home building is really about making decisions. Sometimes hundreds of them in the course of a day and often times they involve a lot of money and can affect the builder's financial future.

By making many small decisions, Larry has gotten good at making the big ones. Read how he handles these three decisions and you will start to understand a little about his business philosophy and maybe why he is so successful.
