Larry's day
8 am
Early mornings are probably the most critical times of the day. This is when I plan my day and resolve problems. The process of building is really putting together thousands of pieces. This involves contacting people by telephone, fax and E-mail. Most subcontractors are on the construction site by daylight, so if I want to schedule them, I have to contact them between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. when they are in their office. When I schedule the different parts of a job I follow a plan. It's very important to keep everything on schedule because when one thing doesn't go according to plan, many other things must be rescheduled to accommodate that. This is what I call "putting out fires". Decisions can't wait. I need to act on these changes immediately so a small problem doesn't become a large one. My decisions are always based on current needs. I usually have to consider many factors when making a business decision: time, money, availability of the subcontractor and availability of the supplier and the product. I take care of all these duties first thing in the morning, to keep the whole project on track. It is always a matter of dealing with all of the little parts that make the big picture. |
